In the past 4 years, I’ve cut my teeth strategizing & writing award-worthy, revenue-increasing, results-snatching copy. And what really lights my fire is writing for woman-owned and BIPOC-led brands. I’m talkin’ the first day after a braiding appointment type of excited! Energizing them to go big with their bold ideas so that when launch time happens, the world thinks “OMG FINALLY, I’ve been waiting for something like this.” And giving them the tools to diversify the market.
Everyone is trying to find a lucrative remote job, and ‘learn copywriting’ is the term on everybody’s tongue. And who can blame them? It’s a highly sought-after (and yet highly underrated) trade that brands and agencies around the world need.
And if you’re really really really great, you can make a huge killing off of it.
But… how to learn on a budget? That is the question.
I myself am completely self-taught and I invested in various different courses, templates, and tools. It still baffles me that during my 4-year Bachelor’s Marketing Degree copywriting NEVER came up, but I digress.
There are 5 free places I learned copywriting that were invaluable to me — so even if you don’t have the funds to learn the trade, you can still learn a lot from these sources.
I’ll be walking you through each of those free places to learn copywriting in this blog post.
But if you haven’t even gotten to that stage yet, you might be wondering…
According to Google, it’s the activity or occupation of writing the text of advertisements or publicity material.
Simply put: it’s writing words that help you sell stuff.
But as someone who, again, has been doing this for 4 years, I’d put my own spin on it (and yeah it’s lengthy but, hell, this is a blog post. You’ve got time!)
cop·y·writ·ing:
Using research, strategy, creativity, storytelling, brand voice, and brand personality to connect with your audience, stand out in the market, and sell your products & services.
It’s the word that 74,500 people search for every month…
The YouTube topic that got 96,000 views on a video…
And the one thing EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS.
And I’ll put my hand on the bible and repeat it again in case you didn’t hear me the first time!
So now that you know what copywriting is, your next step is to train yourself. It would help if you have some background in marketing, advertising, journalism, writing, or psychology — like if you went to school for any of these disciplines, worked for a while doing any of these things, or even write short stories for fun.
But the great thing about copywriting is you don’t NEED to have a background in any of these things. You just need the proper training, the skill, and the brains to do the work.
(Besides my blog, of course)

I’m not ashamed to admit I started my copywriting journey learning on free blogs like this one — and you might think that it’s counterintuitive to promote another blog on my own blog…
But quality is quality! And that’s how I’d describe the Hubspot Blog.
They have so many invaluable posts about copywriting (but so much more, too). Trust, you’ll find a post a day (at least) that’ll refine your copywriting skills.
Yes, I’m recommending another blog — because big brain Neil Patel is known across the interwebs as THEE MAN to go to for online marketing information.
I love his tool Ubersuggest — but this blog was a Godsend when I first started learning about copywriting. And I still go to it for guidance and tips!
I’m closing this list off with another blog because value for free is the best — especially when you’re an award-winning blog that features new content daily to help you master online marketing and advertising.
You can absolutely learn copywriting fundamentals for free on social media, YouTube, and on blogs — like this one!
Once you feel like you’ve learned enough, then comes the next step: creating a spec copywriting project…
Which I’ll be going over in another blog post. Stay tuned!
